Western's Women of Distinction Award 2011

Congratulations to Award Winner Karen DeChristopher

Karen started her career at Western over 18 years ago and is currently the Fumigation Division Marketing Administrator. She supports the marketing and operations team handling the day to day communications with US and Chilean clients, government agencies and does travel domestically and internationally. Karen shows by example how to interface with others for the betterment of the whole. She is willing to give a helping hand to others by sharing her knowledge and experience.

Professionally, Karen has been recognized several times for going above and beyond. She was nominated for Western's "Circle of Excellence" award 8 years in a row, winning every other year. This past September she garnered Rollins' prestigious "President's Club Award". In 2004, Karen was awarded the "Legion of Honor" award by the Chapel of Four Chaplains.

Karen is inspired by her life experiences, appreciation for the needs of people in distress, and her desire to encourage others. She has a long history of giving back. She is a Sunday school teacher and involved with the youth at the First Baptist Community Church. Karen's goal is to help children focus on how to deal with life's difficulties, maintain healthy life styles and how to embrace values that will serve them through life.

In late 2007, Karen volunteered to be the host site Hospitality Coordinator for the Interfaith Council for Homeless Families and is also the committee chair for that ministry. For over 4 years Karen has welcomed countless families with a smile, lent a compassionate ear and actively mentored women and children with the goal of giving them the courage they need to rise above their situation. Karen has served as a Trustee on the ICHF Board of Directors since May 2011, and also serves on their IT and Fundraising Committees. On 11/17/11, Karen was honored at the Interfaith Council's annual volunteer recognition dinner as the first recipient of their "Community Impact Award".

Karen volunteered for the Parsippany Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) in 2006. Last year she became a CERT Leader and continues to make difference in the lives of others. Karen spent countless hours during Hurricane Irene to help victims and first responders in her community. As a former graduate and now presenter at the Parsippany Citizens Police Academy, Karen educates the public about the importance of disaster preparedness. She was recently honored along with other first responders by the Mayor of Parsippany and the Town Council with a certificate for all her efforts during the hurricane Irene disaster. Karen some how also finds the time to support activities at her church, the Food Pantry, Battered Women's Services, American Cancer Society and the Center for Hope Hospice.
