Regional Entomologists Bring Pest Pressures to Light

For some, the thought of pest infestations produces a chill, while others are fascinated by their biology and habits. Suffice it to say that Western’s team of entomologists fall into the latter category, bringing passion and a commitment to education to their role supporting the Western team in delivering proactive pest solutions. That same dedication is applied to our client accounts, which benefit directly from this in-house expertise.

“The great thing about having regional entomologists is that they can come out and assist us with in-service client education sessions,” Tom Mayfield, Branch Manager for Newtown Square and the Lancaster region, says. “They also assist in identification and program design when we face unusual pest conditions.”

Mayfield explains that bringing in a different set of eyes can change the approach to an unusual or emerging pest situation – especially when the insight comes from experts steeped in the biology and habits of bugs and pests. Citing a recent example, Mayfield shared how a Western entomologist was able to reclassify a bed-bug problem as a bat-bug infestation, an issue somewhat common in certain Philadelphia suburbs. (Bat bugs look incredibly similar to bed bugs, and can emerge in a home or business that’s housing a bat population in the attic.)

“Our entomologists are a real value-add for our clients,” Mayfield says, “and something that helps set Western apart.”
