Pest Control in a High-Rise

Office buildings can be extremely difficult to handle when it comes to pest control, due to the large volume of individuals coming in and out each day. It is difficult to nail down the precise origin of where an issue is stemming from, due to the size of the structure and the nature of an office building itself.

Todd Henches, Western’s West Orange, NJ Branch Manager, explains the difficulty of office building pest control, stating, “Office buildings are very difficult, because it could be brought in by any number of people. One of the most important things to do is quell the fears of the employees and that can be very difficult.”

If left untreated, there is a specific pest that can multiply quickly and become a large issue for high-rise structures. Stored Product Pests find office food appealing, specifically because many people do not treat their work place the way they would treat their home. Food can go left forgotten in a drawer or in the office kitchen for days longer than it would have been in a home pantry.

There are several maintenance practices that should be stressed to all employees in order to ensure these pests don’t find their way into your building.

  • Throw away all food that has made its way onto your desk on a daily basis.
  • In the office kitchen, be sure to seal everything in proper food storage containers. Simply leaving food products in the bag they came in will attract any number of stored product pests.
  • Any food items in or around the office desks and work spaces must be stored in food storage containers.
  • Make sure all employees are practicing cleanliness throughout their work place. One unkempt area could cause problems for the entire building. A good practice is to inspect any empty desks or work spaces, especially when employees move locations or are no longer employed by the company.

Follow these simple steps and stored product pests will be that much less likely to infest your high-rise office building. If you suspect that an issue is growing out of hand, be sure to contact your pest professional immediately.
