Stored Product Pests

Stored product pests have grown in popularity but not due to their own savvy nature. These pests are making their way into office buildings due to poor storage and sanitation, something no business should have to deal with throughout an already busy work day.

Stored produce pests can become an issue after the holidays.

From Your Commercial Pest Control Specialist: “Stored product pests are always going to be a hazard if you’re dealing with thirty floors of office space. There are hundreds of cubicles per floor and, potentially, in each cubicle the occupant brings in bags of granola bars or oatmeal – this creates the perfect environment for a problem to start up.” – John Kane, Technical Specialist in CT/NY/North Jersey

Indian meal moths, flies, foreign grain beetles, and cigarette beetles can quickly and efficiently make themselves at home here. There are simple, effective things that businesses, specifically those housed in office buildings, can do to ensure a pest-free work environment.

  • Throw It Out: Throwing away old food that has found its way into your desk should be a practice maintained daily. You may think that granola bar is doing no one any harm, but it could potentially be attracting a number of nuisance pests.
  • Sealed Containers: To ensure complete pest control in your office’s kitchen, store food in sealed containers rather than leaving them in the box or bag they came in.
  • Check Employee Workspaces: The problem with stored product pests is that they are very difficult to eliminate once they’ve made their way into an area that is providing sustenance and shelter. Make sure employees maintain a clean environment in the work place and the level of pests you see should decrease significantly.

“There are a lot of pests we share the world with so as much as we try to separate ourselves from nature, we cannot.” –John Kane
