Bed Bug

Cimex lectularius

Bed Bugs feed off the blood of humans and are attracted to any number of places where humans are found. They don't discriminate and can be found in hospitals, hotels, offices, and many other places. Bites cause raised red welts, a burning sensation and itching...not to mention a PR problem for your building or business.

Risk is defined as how much damage each pest can be to you, your family, or your home
Class: Order: Family:
Insecta Hemiptera Cimicidae
Size: Bed bugs are about 4 - 5 mm in length and 2.5 mm in width.
Color: Nymphs are light brown and continue to grow darker brown
Characteristics: Bed bugs are tiny (4 - 5 mm in length) and have a reddish-brown color. Their shape is oval, they are wingless and have microscopic hairs.
Geographic Range: Found throughout the world in tropical climates, bed bugs in the United States are found predominantly in New York City, the mid-atlantic region and mid-west. Due to mass travel, though, bed bugs can spread to any temperate climate with high denisty occupancy.
Food: Bed bugs live by hemotophagy - the feeding off the blood of humans and warm-blooded animals.
Biology: Bed bugs reproduce fast and furiously. From one female, 5 eggs can be laid and hatched within 2 weeks. And the female can lay up to 500 eggs in a lifetime. The math can be scary.
Check everywhere! Look for signs of infestations: live bugs, blood spots and fecal spots on sheets, and small egg masses.
