Ants or Termites?

It's the most common question we're asked every year.

How do you know if the swarm of winged bugs in your backyard are termites or ants? To the untrained eye, they're hard to tell apart. Our entomologists at Western have prepared this comparison sheet to help you do just that.

Ant or Termite?

Subterranean termites, the most common species in your area, make their colonies in the soil. Each colony is built around a king and queen termite whose sole job is to reproduce. Other members include workers, soldiers and swarmers and each has a very specific job to do.


Winged Ants

  • Often several times larger than Winged Termites
  • Elbowed antennae
  • Three distinct body segments, with very slim "waists"
  • Front wings much longer than back ones

  • Usually 1/8" or so in length
  • Straight antennae
  • No "waistline"
  • Wings long and of equal length
  • Termites break off their wings after flight; ants do not
