Rodent control is an all-year challenge. Yes, the majority of rodents intrude when the temperatures begin to cool in the fall, but this time of year is just as crucial for keeping these pests out. No matter what time of the year, sources of food and shelter will bring rodents to your home. For rodents, when the weather begins to get warm, breeding is more frequent and young rodents begin to search for other sites to establish their home-range. This can be a homeowner's worst nightmare, especially if they are breeding near or in your home.
Few things are more troubling than discovering your spring and summer are being ruined by rodents. If not removed in a timely manner, rodents can wreak havoc on your family picnics, and even worse become disruptive and create unsanitary conditions inside your home. They carry diseases, spoil food and will soil everything they touch. Learning how to properly repel rodents is key in permanently ridding the pests from your property.
Here are a few quick outdoor tips to keep your spring outings more enjoyable:
Seal: During the spring warm-up, check your entire house for cracks or holes, and double-check the ones you sealed before winter started. Probably the most important place to start is replacing a garage door seal that no longer makes a tight seal between the bottom of the door and the floor.
Trap: Check for any suspected burrows in your yard and/or garden, and if found fill with soil or dirt. Come back the next day to see whether they are reopened again. If activity is found, use mousetraps near the burrows and in the corners of your yard. Make sure that you check the traps daily for presence of rodents. If there is something inside the trap, wear gloves before handling. As always, consider the risk to pets and children when using rodent traps.
Clean: As it starts to get warm, picnics and outdoor parties start to arise. When the festivities come to an end, make sure you clean the outdoor area, especially the immediate boundaries of your home. If you have trash bins, remember to use tight covers. Rodents will come from other yards and homes to eat and live, so don't give them a reason to move in.
