Do You Know How Bugs Spend Winter?

  • Insects are cold-blooded, which helps them survive changing temperatures.
  • Most insects, like ladybugs, hibernate all winter long.
  • Some insects produce an antifreeze-like liquid called glycerol in their bodies to reduce the amount of water inside and keep themselves from freezing.
  • Some species of butterflies take a winter vacation, heading south for warmer temperatures until winter is through. The most commonly recognized is the monarch butterfly.
  • Ants store food in their colonies when it’s warm, and then use it over the winter to prevent having to go above the frost line.
  • Arctic beetles can withstand temperatures of more than 120 degrees below zero.
  • Mosquitoes are found everywhere in the world except Antarctica.
  • Certain types of honeybees cluster together in their hives during winter to maintain warmth.
