Termite Home Infestations

Subterranean termites are one of the country’s most destructive and costly structural pests. Detection is tough because the insects live underground and may feed on wood from the inside. Termites in the house may come indoors through gaps in foundations or any lumber that touches the soil.

Signs of Termites in the House

Termites leave telltale clues when they infest wood in homes. These signs can help people determine if the pests are causing problems on their property.

  • Swarmers – These winged insects fly around windows and doors in mating swarms during the spring.
  • Wings – Swarming termites in houses and yards often drop their wings after finding a mate. Check for cast-off wings on windowsills and floors.
  • Mud tubes – Termites build pencil-sized tunnels on floors, walls, and ceilings to protect themselves as they travel to a food source.
  • Damage – In advanced cases, residents may be able to detect damage from termites in the home. Look for timber that appears rotten or sounds hollow when tapped.

In some parts of the world, termites build up. But here, they dig in.

Meet the subterranean termite worker. This little guy is about a quarter inch long, it lives with up to two million of its friends in an underground colony close to a reliable food source, which could be your house.

When termites infest a home, they almost always go in from the ground up. They won’t stop foraging until they find wood. When they find it they eat, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
They eat wood that is usually located in hidden places, so you might not know they’re there until they’ve already caused significant structural damage.

Each year termites do more damage to homes than tornadoes, hurricanes, and fires combined.
My job is to stop them.
