All About Bay Shore, NY

Bay Shore is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Islip. Bay Shore is one of the older hamlets on Long Island. Sagtikos Manor, located in West Bay Shore, was built around 1697. It was used as a British armed forces headquarters at the time of the Battle of Long Island during the Revolutionary War. President Washington stayed at the manor during his tour of Long Island in 1790. The land that would become Bay Shore proper was purchased from the Secatogue Native Americans in 1708 by local schoolteacher John Mowbray for “several eel spears.” The hamlet’s name has changed over time. Early European settlers referred to the area first as Penataquit and later as Awixa. Both were names used by the indigenous Secatogue. For reasons never documented, the name was changed in the early 19th century to Sodom. In 1842 there was a further name change to Mechanicsville, then a return in 1849 to Penataquit. The name Penataquit proved unpopular because it was difficult to spell, and the name of the hamlet and post office was changed to Bay Shore in 1868. Much easier to spell!

Bay Shore clearly has a rich history, but it’s also a tourist destination. Stop by the The Himes Museum of Motor Racing Nostalgia, the biggest and most comprehensive guide to automobile museums in the world. It lists 1,663 museum and collections from 67 countries where cars, motorcycles, trucks, coaches/buses, fire engines, scale models, and automobilia are displayed. And you can see it all! After all that history, head to Great South Bay Brewery for a flight of beer. Don’t fill up, though because you will want to have dinner at The Lakehouse. We suggest the tomato bisque and the porcini-crusted sea bass. Every year, people flock to Bay Shore to enjoy everything it has to offer, but unfortunately, so do pests. While these bugs and rodents provide benefits to the eco-system in Bay Shore, they can also be a serious problem at homes and businesses. That’s when a professional pest control expert should be called in.

Pest Control Services Near You

Properly controlling pests in Bay Shore, NY should be done on a local level. Bay Shore’s pest issues are different than Connecticut’s and way different than New Jersey’s. The pest control company you choose should have knowledge and expertise in your town. That’s Western Pest Services. We have been servicing New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, and Pennsylvania for almost 100 years. That kind of expertise is unmatched in the industry. And with a branch located in nearby New York City, our technicians, customer services representatives, and everyone else that works at that location lives and works in the area, too. Our neighbors are your neighbors, and we treat them that way.

As the Empire State, New York is known for the city that never sleeps, but it’s got no shortage of lush vegetation. The towns on Long Island are no exception. Warm, moist summers give way to cold winters, which means over-wintering insects, rodents, and other small wildlife need to find warm places to wait out the cold. The local extermination experts at our NY branch are used to dealing with mice, carpenter ants, bed bugs, termites, mosquitoes, ticks – and even the occasional cheeky raccoon or hiding bat. No matter the season, your pest control service needs will be taken care of by a local exterminator that knows the area and the pests that are common to it. In the summer, they know what that the ponds and birdbaths many people have around their homes can be exactly where mosquitoes like to breed. They know that the ticks that come out during the summer months can transmit Lyme disease so while nobody can help the wooded areas around Shipwreck Cove Spray Park, they can help your backyard stay free from them. In the cooler months, they know mice can try to make their way into your garage – especially if that’s where you keep the 20 lb. dog food bag! No matter what pest, any time of the year, our pest control treatments in Bay Shore can help, including:

  • Bats
  • Bed bugs
  • Ticks
  • Spotted lanternflies
  • Ants
  • Carpenter ants
  • Spiders
  • Beetles
  • Rats
  • Raccoons
  • Cockroaches
  • Squirrels
  • Termites
  • Mice
