Home Pest Control Tips: Crawl Spaces

Crawl Space Pest Control

The most important aspect of any pest-free home is a clean and well-maintained environment both on the inside and the outside.

However, all too often, different areas of your home can be neglected, making them the most attractive place for pests of all shapes and sizes to hide.

We recently caught up with Western’s South Jersey and Philadelphia Regional Sales Manager, Paul Filardo, who explained that one of the areas most neglected by homeowners is crawl spaces:

“A common theme we see among East Coast homes is crawlspaces- whether these areas qualify as a basement or an attic, pests are drawn to them as a source of warmth and comfort.”

Crawl Space Checks

When was the last time you checked your crawlspace for moisture problems or pests? If you are like many other homeowners, the answer is probably not recently.

This, however, can create problems – undetected moisture can cause everything from wood rot to increased issues with pests like termites and carpenter ants.

All three can be expensive problems to have…

“We stress the importance of crawlspace moisture control with clients, we’ll go down there and take pictures so that homeowners can see the issues.”
– Paul Filardo, South Jersey and Philadelphia Regional Sales Manager

Oftentimes, your crawlspace is also comprised of the moisture that pests seek.

In an effort to divert pests away from these areas of your home, be sure to consider ventilation and moisture barriers. These help to control humidity levels and, in effect, control your home’s susceptibility to pests.

Common Crawl Space Pests

Certain wood eaters and insects love moisture and it is important to check your crawl spaces, basement, and attic areas to make sure there isn’t excessive moisture attracting pests.

Pay particular attention to:

If your home has a crawlspace, attic, or basement, it’s best to get those areas inspected just in case there is an issue you are unaware of.

Contact a pest control professional to ensure all areas of your home are pest free; even the ones you might not regularly visit.
